The Pennsylvania Chafee Education and Training Grant is a type of grant offered by the state to help students pursue higher education. Its requirements mirror those of the federal Pell Grant. Students who meet certain eligibility criteria can apply for the Pennsylvania State Grant (PASG). Students must have either graduated high school or obtained a G.E.D. in order to be eligible. Transfer students can also apply. After submitting the application, students should submit their most recent transcripts.

In order to be considered for a PASG, students must complete three regular degree credits per semester, which means that at least 50% of the credits required to complete the program must be completed in a classroom. Your application for the PA State Grant could be delayed if you are enrolled in an online program. PASG funding can also not be disbursed until after the end of the term.

Pennsylvania Chafee Education and Training Grant

Pennsylvania Chafee Education Training Grant: If you are a Pennsylvania resident and would like to go to college for free, then you might be eligible. Pennsylvania students who were in foster care and have been released from that care have the opportunity to receive funds. The program has several requirements, including financial need, academic progress, and no defaults on federal student loans.

The grant is for tuition only, not room and board. To qualify, the youth must have a minimum of 26 years and be residing in Pennsylvania. In order to receive the grant, the student must apply to a Pennsylvania postsecondary institution and meet the state's eligibility requirements. An application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), Pennsylvania Chafee Education and Training Grant Program, (PCETG) must be completed by the applicant. Once accepted, the student will receive the tuition waiver for up to five years, or until they reach age 26.

Pell Grant

Pell Grants, which are government subsidies, can help you to pay for school. The program was created to aid students in need of financial assistance who are not yet enrolled in a bachelor’s degree program. You must be accepted to the participating institution and have financial need to qualify for this program.

For the 2011-2012 award period, the maximum Pell Grant award is $5,000. This amount is prorated. The Pell lifetime limit has been lowered from 18 semesters in 2008 to 12 semesters in 2012. A student's EFC, as well as the length of their academic programs, determine the Pell award amount.

Pennsylvania's Higher Education Assistance Agency is sponsoring the New Economy Technology Scholarship Program. This program provides scholarships up to $3,000. There are two types of scholarships available: the SciTech Scholarship or the NETS Scholarship. Both awards help Pennsylvania residents to earn advanced degrees in technology-related fields.

All applicants must have at least a 3.0 average in high school at the time they apply. The grant money is awarded on a first-come-first-serve basis, and recipients must also apply for a Federal Pell Grant and a Pennsylvania State Grant.
